The St. Albans concert will feature the Ysaye Quartet in a program of the Beethoven Quartet in F minor, Op. 95, Franck String Quartet, and the Haydn Quartet in C major, Op. 54, No. 2.
The Ysaye Quartet is Guillaume Sutre, violin, Luc-Marie Aguera, violin, Miguel Da Silva, viola, and Francois Salque, cello. They will hold a special pre-performance discussion in the First Congregational Church at 6 p.m.
A graduate of the Paris Conservatory, Guillaume Sutre has appeared as soloist with Menuhin and Dutoit in Paris and Berlin, in recital at Wigmore Hall in London, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and in Salzburg and Geneva, and has toured South America, Africa and Southeast Asia as a soloist and chamber musician.
Luc-Marie Aguera studied at the Conservatories of Rouen and Paris and is a founding member of the Ysaye Quartet.
Miguel Da Silva also studied at the Paris Conservatory. He was a member of the Paris Opera Orchestra and is a full time member of the Quartet.
Francois Salque is an active soloist and recording artist; he has performed with the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Suisse Romande and Monte Carlo Orchestras and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and has toured more than 20 countries.
Formed in l984, the Ysaÿe Quartet is named after the violinist and composer Eugene Ysaÿe (1858-1931), who was a powerful influence on the musical world of his day. The Ysaÿe captured international attention when it became the first French quartet ever to win the Grand Prize at the Evian (now Bordeaux) International String Quartet Competition in 1988. An extraordinary 1989 debut at the Salzburg Festival resulted in immediate re-engagement for the following summer, and in January l992, the ensemble established itself as one of Europe's pre-eminent ensembles with highly acclaimed cycles of the six Mozart quartets dedicated to Haydn in both Salzburg and Vienna.
Since then, the Quartet has been invited to perform throughout the world, making eight world tours to date. It has appeared in Japan (including Suntory Hall in Tokyo), the United States (including Carnegie Hall), Hong Kong, China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Central America, Israel and throughout Europe, including the Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and at the Salzburg, Korsholm, Stresa, Cheltenham, Luberon and Lockenhaus Festivals and the Folles Journées in St. Petersburg.
Their current season includes appearances at the the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Amadeus Festival in Geneva, at Wigmore Hall in London, at the Cite de la Musique and Theatre de la Ville in Paris, and concerts in Istanbul, St. Petersburg, Bilbao and Lisbon. The Quartet also continues its Haydn quartet cycle in Besançon, tours Sicily and Israel. The members of the Quartet are on the faculty of the Conservatoire Superieur de Musique de Paris.
On its debut tour of North America in 1990, the Ysaÿe Quartet won accolades from audiences and critics in l5 cities across the continent, including New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Vancouver and Los Angeles. Nine subsequent American tours have taken the Quartet to more than forty different cities, recently including Boston, Washington, San Diego, Memphis, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles. Its visit in the fall of 2002 included a series of concerts with the Paris Piano Trio, featuring the Chausson Concerto for piano, violin, and string quartet.
The Ysaÿe Quartet has recorded on the Harmonia Mundi, Philips and Decca labels, including, for Decca, the complete works for string quartet by Félix Mendelssohn and the piano quartets and quintets of Gabriel Fauré with their compatriot Pascal Rogé. The members of the Quartet are on the faculty of the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where they have established a special class for string quartets.
The Quartet will hold a pre-performance discussion with the artists at 6 p.m. in the First Congregational Church.
Chow Bella! will host the evening with delicious delectables before the concert and during intermission.

Presented by the All Arts Council and the Vermont Mozart Festival, this Ysaÿe Quartet concert is sponsored by the Peoples Trust Company with major assistance from Channel 15, the County Courier, St. Albans for the Future (the St. Albans Downtown Committee), and the St. Albans Messenger.
